A Blue Zone in Georgia

independent living marietta GALife expectancy in the United States averages around 80 years of age, but in some parts of the world – including specific locations in the U.S. – people are living to be 100 years old or more. In 2004, National Geographic assembled a team of experts to study the world’s longest-living people, and found five cities that met their criteria. These concentrations of long-living seniors – located in Ikaria, Greece; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; and Loma Linda, California – are identified as The Blue Zones, and the keys to their longevity appear to be associated with their lifestyle and environment.

The team of researchers found several evidence-based common factors among all five Blue Zones that linked lifestyle with life expectancy, proving that elevating your lifestyle and environment can add years to your life and life to your years. But you don’t have to move to a Blue Zone to take advantage of a long, healthy life. Parc Communities embodies a premier lifestyle and environment that implements the following five key components found in Blue Zone regions.

Move Naturally

The world’s longest-lived people don’t join gyms or lift weights. Instead they were documented as living in an environment that consistently keeps them on the move. They grow gardens, walk to a friend’s home, climb steps, and they don’t have mechanical conveniences for yard or house work.

Know Your Purpose

Without citing specific direction, the study found that knowing one’s purpose in life and understanding what’s truly worth living for can add up to seven years of life expectancy! Many people find their life’s mission in serving others, artistic endeavors, and maintaining healthy family relationships.

Reduce Stress

Stress leads to poor health and is associated with every major age-related disease. People in the Blue Zones experience stress, too, but the study revealed that they indulge daily in stress busting routines such as walking, praying, meditating, taking a nap, or attending social activities.

Get Social

The study shows that choosing or creating social circles that support healthy behaviors is an essential element to living well. Including this one component does more to add happy years to your life than nearly anything else, because of the destructive nature of isolation.

Belong

The study confirmed that over 98% of Blue Zone centenarians belonged to a faith-based community. Regardless of denomination, attending religious services four times a month can add four to fourteen years to one’s life.

Here at Parc Communities, we recognize the value of Blue Zone lifestyle habits, and have created comprehensive Wellness Programs that emphasize four primary functional components: Social, Physical, Intellectual, and Spiritual. We offer our residents the tools and opportunities to improve their health and build a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Parc at Duluth Hosts Technology Workshop

Tomorrow, January 11th, Parc at Duluth is hosting a primetime technology workshop. Residents can meet in the Media Center at 2pm to learn and practice with the latest communications technology. Since many of our residents have family and friends out of state – tablets, iPads, Skype, and smart phones allow them to easily stay connected.senior-technology-workshop

As we have previously mentioned in blogs about seniors and technology, although seniors may not adopt these mediums first, their benefits can be numerous. For instance, larger screens of tablets and iPads make reading the news or doing a crossword puzzle easier for people with vision problems.  Our residents often engage in various activities and events that incorporate technology including Wii® tournaments and computer lifelong active brain courses (Learning L.A.B.).

During our workshop, residents will learn how to use and enjoy these new technologies. This event is great for people wanting to become more familiar with a technology they haven’t had much experience with, or if they just need a quick refresher.

The Difference Between “Assisted Living” and “Licensed Personal Care”

People use the term “assisted living” quite often, but many may be using it incorrectly. Add “licensed personal care” to the mix and things begin to get downright confusing.  Parc Communities is here to help establish the difference between these two senior living terms to make it easier to understand when you or your parent(s) are looking to make the transition into a senior living community.  People who need reliable assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’s) can find supportive care with our licensed personal care community.assisted living vs licensed personal care in atlanta ga

Although assisted living and personal care facilities are similar in the state regulations they must meet, Parc Communities’ standard for licensed personal care stands out from the rest. For instance, theaverage staffing ratio for assisted living is one staff member for every 15 residents, whereas at Parc, weare able to provide more personalized care with one experienced professional for every 12 residents. Parc Communities also offers a more intimate atmosphere as we serve 25 or fewer residents at once, while assisted living must serve a minimum of 25 residents, allowing us to provide exceptional personal care and attention.

So let’s make this simple. Assisted living communities can help you take care of all your personal services. A licensed personal care community such as Parc Communities offers all-inclusive licensed care and assistance in an active and engaging environment. With licensed nurses and caregivers available 24/7, residents are free to enjoy the hospitality of the Parc lifestyle knowing that all their needs will be met.

Seniors Using Social Media- What are the Benefits?

With over 900 million users on Facebook, it should come as no surprise that many use social media to remain connected with one another. For Parc Communities residents staying connected with loved ones is of upmost importance. The great thing about social media is that families can keep up with each other’s lives despite the distance. Parc residents have siblings, children, and grandchildren spread across the country and with busy schedules it can be difficult to get everyone together at the same time. Google+ Hangouts provide a great social media outlet that allows families to catch up with one another face-to-face through web cams. Not only is social media a good way to connect seniors with family, but also old friends and colleagues.

Sites such as Facebook allow seniors to see pictures of their friends, family, co-workers, etc. as well as current events in their lives. Besides being able to see what their loved ones are up to, the next time they visit with each other they are already informed on what’s going on in their friends’lives. YouTube allows families to upload and share home videos quickly, giving seniors the opportunity to watch those special moments such as a grandbaby learning to walk.

Several of our residents have already jumped on the technology bandwagon and use iPads to browse pictures posted online and interact with others.  Parc Communities also have a computer center available for all residents to use.

If you are interested in viewing all of Parc’s amenities please call us today to schedule a tour! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated on the latest information and news for seniors.
