People use the term “assisted living” quite often, but many may be using it incorrectly. Add “licensed personal care” to the mix and things begin to get downright confusing. Parc Communities is here to help establish the difference between these two senior living terms to make it easier to understand when you or your parent(s) are looking to make the transition into a senior living community. People who need reliable assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’s) can find supportive care with our licensed personal care community.
Although assisted living and personal care facilities are similar in the state regulations they must meet, Parc Communities’ standard for licensed personal care stands out from the rest. For instance, theaverage staffing ratio for assisted living is one staff member for every 15 residents, whereas at Parc, weare able to provide more personalized care with one experienced professional for every 12 residents. Parc Communities also offers a more intimate atmosphere as we serve 25 or fewer residents at once, while assisted living must serve a minimum of 25 residents, allowing us to provide exceptional personal care and attention.
So let’s make this simple. Assisted living communities can help you take care of all your personal services. A licensed personal care community such as Parc Communities offers all-inclusive licensed care and assistance in an active and engaging environment. With licensed nurses and caregivers available 24/7, residents are free to enjoy the hospitality of the Parc lifestyle knowing that all their needs will be met.

Many people don’t usually think of seniors as quick adopters of the latest technologies. However, at Parc Communities many of our residents in Atlanta and Duluth, GA use a variety of technology in their everyday life. It’s not uncommon to see a resident in the library playing a game on their tablet or video chatting with grandchildren across the country.
Mobile technologies can help people stay in touch with others, provide entertainment, keep up with current events, and the list goes on. A recent article published in the New York Times discusses another potential benefit of seniors using tablets such as the iPad®: easier reading. Tablets have the capability to adjust type size, making text easier to see. According to the article, Dr. Daniel Roth, an eye specialist and clinical associate professor at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, states, “The No.1 complaint I get from older patients is that they love to read but can’t, and this really bothers them.” With adjustable font, seniors are able to read material that they may no longer be able to see on print.
Parc residents also frequently participate in activities that combine technology and wellness. For instance, Parc Communities offer Learning L.A.B. which is a computer based brain fitness program that helps improve brain function and enhance performance in the way you receive, process, and record information.

Staying active is beneficial for both your mind and body. At Parc Communities, we understand as we age, focusing on a healthy lifestyle becomes even more important for our overall well-being. Recent research from the University of California, Irvine published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, found individuals who briefly exercised showed improvement in memory.
The study examined more than 50 adults between the ages of 50 to 85, half who had memory issues and half who did not. The groups of participants were then divided into two groups- one who exercised on a stationary bike for six minutes and the other group who did not exercise at all. All of the exercising participants, regardless of whether they had long term memory impairments or not, showed improved memory after their short time biking.
The researchers believe the benefit may be tied to an exercise-induced brain chemical, norepinephrine, which influences memory. Saliva samples taken from participants found high levels of the biomarker for norepinphrine in the exercise group.
Although these finding are a good start, additional research will need to be conducted. At Parc, our residents lead an active lifestyle through our fitness and wellness programs, along with a busy social calendar.
