Seniors Using Social Media- What are the Benefits?

With over 900 million users on Facebook, it should come as no surprise that many use social media to remain connected with one another. For Parc Communities residents staying connected with loved ones is of upmost importance. The great thing about social media is that families can keep up with each other’s lives despite the distance. Parc residents have siblings, children, and grandchildren spread across the country and with busy schedules it can be difficult to get everyone together at the same time. Google+ Hangouts provide a great social media outlet that allows families to catch up with one another face-to-face through web cams. Not only is social media a good way to connect seniors with family, but also old friends and colleagues.

Sites such as Facebook allow seniors to see pictures of their friends, family, co-workers, etc. as well as current events in their lives. Besides being able to see what their loved ones are up to, the next time they visit with each other they are already informed on what’s going on in their friends’lives. YouTube allows families to upload and share home videos quickly, giving seniors the opportunity to watch those special moments such as a grandbaby learning to walk.

Several of our residents have already jumped on the technology bandwagon and use iPads to browse pictures posted online and interact with others.  Parc Communities also have a computer center available for all residents to use.

If you are interested in viewing all of Parc’s amenities please call us today to schedule a tour! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated on the latest information and news for seniors.

Healthy Summer Snacks

Healthy Summer SnacksThe summer is flying by but the heat isn’t letting up anytime soon. It’s important to remember to stay hydrated and eat healthy as the temperatures remain high. Snacking in moderation can be very beneficial when you choose the right snacks. For older adults, snacking can encourage eating a more balanced diet as well as provide important energy and nutrients. At Parc Communities we want our residents to live life to the fullest, so we complied a short list of healthy summer snacks to keep you satisfied throughout the day.

High in Fiber: Fiber helps your digestion process and keeps you feeling full longer. Good fiber rich snacks that can be stored easily in your pantry or purse include nuts, whole-grain crackers, and all-natural granola bars.

Low Sodium: Most Americans eat too much salt and processed foods. Try these low-sodium snacks: apple sauce, popcorn with unsalted butter, and hard-boiled eggs (full of protein too!).

Brain Food: Keeping your brain healthy is important at any age. Nourish your brain with these power snacks – blueberries, unsalted nuts, dark chocolate (remember just a little!).

Antioxidants:  Fresh fruit (berries and grapes especially) and precut veggies (carrots, broccoli, tomatoes) are rich in antioxidants that can help prevent many diseases.

As with all foods, moderation is key. Being mindful of the snacks you eat will help you maintain a healthy diet.  Our executive chefs offer residents a variety of delicious and well-balanced meals each day. If you are interested in scheduling a lunch and personal tour of Parc Communities please call us today. Parc at Duluth Embraces Most Patriotic City in the U.S.

Cities all throughout the U.S. have something they are proud of or known for. In Georgia, many cities have nicknames based on their identity whether it’s Elberton, The Granite City, or Gainesville, Poultry Capital of the World, every community has a special point of pride.  The city of Duluth definitely has something to boast as they are one of the most patriotic cities in America.

You might have suspected there was something special about Duluth if you have ever met any of the Parc at Duluth residents. Our residents form a unique, diverse community of people from all around the state and U.S. We have numerous residents who spent their careers serving our country and are now retired military.  If you are in the lounge relaxing before dinner you will probably hear stories about life, work, and relationships being shared among residents.  The combination of unique experiences and individuals makes Parc a truly exceptional place to live.

We would like to highlight an exciting event we have planned for our Parc at Duluth residents at the end of July.  On Tuesday July 31st, we will tour Atlanta’s rich and famous neighborhoods. The outing will start at 10am as we learn the history of Atlanta’s modest beginnings while driving thru the downtown, midtown and Buckhead neighborhoods. We will view where some of the “rich and famous” Atlantans live and have lived. After getting our fill of People Magazine style voyeurism we will head over to Six Feet Under to enjoy lunch before heading back home.

And the party doesn’t stop there; we have more events planned for next weekend, too.

Parc at Piedmont residents will be staying cool in the media room with feature movies including ‘I am the flag’ and John Wayne’s ‘Tribute to America’.  On Sunday afternoon, residents can go on a scenic drive with a stop for a delicious glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme.

We are sure we will see a lot of red, white, and blue around Parc this week. Residents of Parc at Duluth can attend special Fourth of July brunch mid-morning on Wednesday. Parc at Piedmont – East Cobb to Host Candidate Forum for Primary Elections

Parc at Piedmont – East Cobb, an Independent andAssisted Living Senior Community, will host a Candidate Forum on Tuesday, June 26th from 7 to 9pm at their 999 Hood Road Marietta, GA 30068 location. Participants in this forum will feature candidates running for elective office in the upcoming July 31st primary for the November 6th election.

At least 25 candidates/incumbents running for all levels of state and local government are expected to participate. This independent forum will give voters an opportunity for one-on-one conversations and small group interactions. The participants, to date, will include candidates for Cobb County sheriff, State Representative, Cobb Commission Chairman, School Board, Judicial, District Attorney, Clerk’s Office, and a tentative commitment from the Georgia Attorney General, Sam Olens.

Each candidate will have a 10 – 15 second introduction, and each will have a name tag identifying the office they seek. There will be no speeches. The officials are there to talk one-on-one or in small groups on issues that are important to you, your family, and your community. The Candidate Forum will be open to the general public as well as Parc at Piedmont residents. The senior community invites the media and attendees to bring guests to take advantage of this rare opportunity.

The Candidate Forum is one of Parc at Piedmont-East Cobb’s monthly events offered to senior residents. The community also makes cultural outings such as trips to the theatre, museums, and local businesses a regular offering to community residents to enhance senior’s quality of life and connection to the Atlanta community. Parc at Piedmont-East Cobb’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Porter Scogin, adds, “We are delighted to provide the venue for this important event. Our residents are independent, active, and very interested in state and local politics. This will be a great opportunity for the candidates to ‘come to them’ as well as to the general public.”

How do I know if my mom or dad needs to move into a senior living or an assisted living community?

This is a question we at Parc Communities hear frequently, and it’s a very important one.  As the care giver of an aging parent, we understand that you only want the very best for your parent just as they want the very best for you as their child.  At Parc Communities we understand that the needs of our residents are ever-changing.  This is the reason why we’ve recently expanded our senior living communities in both Duluth and Marietta to also offer assisted living

When deciding between senior living and assisted living the area we really focus on is ADL, that is, activities of daily livingThese are the regular tasks completed on a day-to-day basis (i.e., food preparation, personal grooming, dressing, etc.) that help us determine individual strengths as well as areas where some residents may need (or prefer) assistance.  Because aging affects each individual differently, we also make ParcCare services available to our residents.  This proprietary system assists those residents who may need specialized assistance with specific tasks, but aren’t in need of the comprehensive care provided in Parc assisted living.

If your parents are interested in down-sizing and moving to a senior community or Atlanta assisted living community, it’s best that they sit down with one of our specialists to help discuss their senior lifestyle options.  We work hard at Parc Communities to ensure that all of our residents have access to all the amenities they’re accustomed to as well as providing new opportunities to grow socially, emotionally, and physically through resident activities.

To schedule a tour of one of Parc Communities’ Atlanta locations, or to learn more about our senior living options, visit our website.  You can also connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google + for regular senior living updates.

Staying Active Through the Summer

Summer is time for enjoying the nice weather and being active. At Parc Communities healthy living is a priority; June’s monthly wellness seminar will focus on the Great Outdoors and getting people to move more.  Parc Communities has numerous summer events planned to satisfy everyone’s interests including water aerobics, fitness groups, Wii play and more.  Physical fitness programs offer residents the opportunity to integrate balance, endurance, strength and of course socializing.

Why is activity important for seniors?

According to Dr. Gisele Wolf-Klein, the director of geriatric education at the North Shore-LIJ Health System in NY, continuing exercise routines is one of the best things an elderly individual can do for their health.  That’s why we offer exercise options to accommodate different residents’ lifestyles at Parc Communities.  Exercise is associated with lessening risk of cardiovascular problems, decreasing the possibility of cancer, and helping to minimize the risk of developing diabetes, just to name a few.  Besides all of these benefits, staying physically active helps increase overall energy, and who couldn’t use a little bit more energy?

Being physically active does more than make you strong, it also has numerous benefits for your social health.  All of the exercise activities at Parc Communities are done in groups and encourage socialization among residents to maintain a sense of community.

If you aren’t yet a regular exerciser, don’t worry, Parc Communities’ comprehensive Fitness and Wellness Programs are specifically tailored to your individual level of physical ability, skill and personal fitness goals.  Our unique programs allows you to choose what activities you are interested in to help you build a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.

Check out all the events planned for June at Parc at Piedmont and Parc at Duluth.  To learn more about Parc Communities, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google +.  Please contact our office to schedule a visit to one of our locations!

Atlanta Senior Living Community Partners with International Council on Active Aging

Parc Communities helps redefine aging with national campaign and local support

Parc Communities, Atlanta’s group of premier senior living communities, has partnered with the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) to promote the Changing the Way We Age® Campaign across the Atlanta area. Dedicated to enjoying life after 55, Parc Communities’ residents are changing the way Atlanta sees seniors.

The ICAA’s Changing the Way We Age® Campaign was created to help re-envision the notion of aging across American society, highlighting the potential resources available to those in retirement. Targeting media and marketing organizations, the campaign focuses on “rebranding” the current go-to notions about aging and highlighting opportunities for communities and retirees to work together through volunteerism, peer education, and intergenerational learning.

The latter drew the attention of Parc Communities’ Wellness Director, Angela Butler-Hackett, who heard the requests of Parc residents wanting more opportunities to give back to society. Parc Communities, in cooperation with the ICAA’s initiative, visited local schools to conduct a senior-led exercise event. Students also had the opportunity to interview Parc Residents, learning about their lives and history in the process. Butler-Hackett says that the students’ thank you letters included many compliments to the senior community and included phrases like, “You are the coolest old person I have ever met.”

Parc Communities’ residents have worked to give back to the community in other ways as well, collecting and donating over two hundred pounds of canned goods to a local elementary school with needy families. Defying classic notions of seniors and technology, Parc helps seniors stay connected and social media savvy.  Parc Communities’ Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ profiles provide the latest senior living news and community activities.

Bridging the gap between young and old, Parc Communities and the ICAA are using the Changing the Way We Age® Campaign to bring awareness to the capabilities of a generation often incorrectly characterized by inability. Parc Communities invites other area organizations to partner with them in the campaign, demonstrating how seniors like the residents of Parc at Piedmont and Parc at Duluth can contribute to society. Interested organizations are asked to contact Angela Butler-Hackett by emailing
